Four A24 Films Worth Watching for the Music

We watch a lot of films for the music. Not because we're always working on something adjacent, but because that's still where the most interesting music supervision decisions get made - in a room with a director who has an opinion, and a budget that forces choices.

The Moment is probably the most discussed in terms of music already this year, and deservedly. A.G. Cook's score isn't doing what film scores normally do - it's not underlining emotion, it's generating it. The fact that Cook has spent years building a sonic language with Charli xcx and then gets to apply that to a film about a pop star is a rare alignment. You can hear it. This one doesn't work without the music.

Mother Mary used original music from Jack Antonoff in a way that felt less like scoring and more like world-building. David Lowery treats sound the way he treats light - atmospherically, precisely. Long-buried wounds rise to the surface, and the music is what tells you where you are emotionally before the script does. There's a version of this film that doesn't work. The music is why it does.

Backrooms had a sonic approach that matched the film's texture exactly - slightly off, genre-adjacent without being genre-defined. Horror is where sound design and music supervision blur most interestingly, and Renate Reinsve in an endless maze of office space deserves something unsettling in the best possible way. The kind of film where you notice the music isn't distracting you, which means it's doing its job perfectly.

Deep Cuts is the one we're watching most closely - Sean Durkin directing a story about two music-obsessed twenty-somethings who collide in a campus bar and build something together over a decade. The Iron Claw had one of the better period music approaches of recent years. A film that's about music obsession directed by someone who clearly has it himself feels like a combination worth the wait.

What connects all four? None of them use music as decoration. The music is doing load-bearing work. That's still rarer than it should be.
